Katherine Bradford - Paper Variable 2014

Katherine Bradford
Superheroes & Divers, 2014
Pigmented linen on cotton base sheet and colored pencil
14 x 11 inches

Dieu Donné is pleased to release Superheroes & Divers, a new Paper Variables commission by Katherine Bradford. Working collaboratively with Studio Collaborator Amy Jacobs, the artist used pigmented pulp to translate her painting process into a new medium. The 25 individual works in the series each feature a diver or a superhero suspended mid-air with unique backgrounds.

Following an introduction to the particularities of the medium, Bradford emulated painting processes in a rainbow of pigmented pulp, such as visible brush strokes, thinning out
the medium to create translucent washes, or building layers of thick impasto. She also incorporated techniques developed in the Dieu Donné studio that are specific to papermaking, such as blowing away pigment from pulp fibers using a fine mist of water to create a halo effect. Each of the 25 unique variants are made of highly pigmented, finely beaten linen pulp paint
on cotton base sheets. Mylar stencils were used to create the central figure, and a second stencil created the detail of either a bathing suit for the divers or cape, gloves, and boots for the superhero. Some works in the edition also incorporate gouache and/or colored pencil added in the artist’s own studio.
