Julia Jacquette
Flat Sheet (Box for Perfume), 2013
Pigmented cotton, metallic pigment, and hand-painted gouache
15 1⁄2 x 17 1⁄2 inches

Julia Jacquette’s new edition Flat Sheet (Box for Perfume) is a clever take on the package design of Chantilly, the ubiquitous drugstore perfume. Made in the shape of the unfolded box known as a ‘flat sheet’ the artist hand-painted each work with phrase “If only I was as perfect as you”. Using the visual language of vintage advertising, Chantilly represents an iconic mark of femininity, playing on themes of longing and desire that recur in Jacquette’s work.

To achieve the familiar lace pattern Lisa Switalski, Studio Collaborator, used a segment of actual lace as a stencil, and the gold emblem was created in metallic pigmented pulp through an additional stenciling process. Lastly,
the artist meticulously hand painted the text in metallic gouache. In a clever conundrum, the work recreates a recognizable mass-produced object in handmade paper through combinations of repetitive and singular techniques.
