Artist Statement

“The geometric shapes throughout my work are drawn from memories of animals, symbols, and patterns in the Persian rugs of my childhood. In their current form, however, they are intended to invite multiple interpretations, beyond any singular culture or context. By emphasizing the fluid and subjective nature of personal memory, my “in-between shapes” transcend their original source. Both specific and open-ended, they speak to a broader diasporic experience.

For these variables In Shades of Purple, I continued my process of selectively couching and layering abaca onto a cotton base sheet. The technique is both organic and controlled, resulting in surfaces that appear almost topographical. I then embedded geometric shapes using stencils and linen pulp paint. To complete each piece, I sewed and stitched another shape with gold threads, responding intuitively to the paper and the embedded forms.”
