Sarah Crowner Paper Variable 2013

Sarah Crowner
Untitled, 2013
Pigmented cotton
17 x 12 1⁄4 inches

Dieu Donné is pleased to announce a new edition by Sarah Crowner of 25 variable artworks in handmade paper as part of the 2013 Paper Variables program. Each piece in the series shares the same geometric composition, but is made distinctive with a unique combination of color which has been determined by the artist and produced in vibrantly pigmented cotton. The composition of Untitled references a painting from the 1950’s by William Klein, which has also provided inspiration for several of Crowner’s more widely known works in painted and sewn canvas.

The edition was produced through a call and response between artist and studio collaborator Paul Wong. Crowner selected and arranged the colors and shapes, while Wong fabricated the components and collaged them together. The geometric components, made of pigmented cotton in pink, orange, chartreuse, black, and periwinkle, were individually collaged into sheets of either black or lime green cotton paper, presenting an additional variation of line and spacing within each piece. The artist performed a mathematical approach to discovering the permutation within a set of variables, resulting in a playful study of color and form.
