Dieu Donné is pleased to release Veils of Rain, a new Paper Variables edition by Nancy Cohen. Working with Master Collaborator Tatiana Ginsberg, the artist created a variable edition of 15 works by layering richly pigmented pulp paint and intricate blowouts on top of thin sheets of handmade abaca paper.

Environmental and personal vulnerability are longstanding focuses of Cohen’s work. In this edition, she combines oppositions and contradictions through formal elements and the materiality of handmade paper. Cohen explains, “Line is the operative formal element in the work, but there are many other lines in play. Lines delineate, but as often they act contrarily, blurring distinctions. More fundamentally though, there is a fine fragile line between existence and its opposite, a line we all walk and which the small and large environments that contain us walk as well.

There is also the fine fragile line between the internal and the external. Handmade paper -- translucent, delicate, and yet unexpectedly tough and durable—exposes the internal and yet protects it. It is skin and structure, portal and shield. For decades, this material has played a central and natural role for me in work exploring dualities of vulnerability and strength.”
