Mark Fox
i cannot see you or hear you, 2010
Pigmented cotton, acrylic/pigment stain, linen archival tape, abaca and thread
18 x 13 x 3 1/4 inches

Dieu Donné is pleased to announce a new edition by Mark Fox of 35 variable artworks in handmade paper as part of the 2010 Paper Variables program.

The newest addition to the Collector’s Series portfolio breaks away from the two dimensional plane of a work made of paper, and becomes a sculptural multiple. Mark Fox writes: “much of my work for the past several years has focused on the written word —specifically dogmatic documents of the Catholic Church. My interests lie in transcribing these ‘infallible’ doctrines and their stern directives, then cutting and rearranging the text to create sculptural forms. Lately, I’ve become interested in other types of texts, such as the many handwritten signs and notes I see posted throughout New York City containing messages for the passers-by. For Dieu Donne I chose one of my favorite finds – a handwritten note posted on the far side of a subway station booth. The note [transcribed below], intended for subway riders on the wrong side of the booth, seems to speak to a greater need”

Please don’t bang on window.
I can only help you if you’re in front of me.
I cannot see you or hear you.
Please come out so I can help.
