Rico Gatson - Paper Variable 2012

Rico Gatson
Hyphens in the Road, 2012
Pigmented cotton and linen base sheet, acrylic paint
13 1/2 x 11 inches

Dieu Donné is pleased to announce a new edition by Rico Gatson of 25 variable artworks in handmade paper as part of the 2012 Paper Variables program. Hyphens in the Road is an edition of acrylic paint on pigmented cotton and linen in five variations.

The title of the series comes from a passage in Isabel Wilkerson’s book The Warmth of Other Suns on the subject of the Great Migration, the period in our history (1910-1970) when over 6 million African Americans left the rural South for the Northeast, Midwest, and West. Wilkerson describes “hyphens in the road that blurred together toward a far away place, bridging unrelated things as hyphens do.” The imagery of the highway, a symbol used in popular culture to represent the uncertain possibilities of the future, conveys a journey that the artist states is “personal and universal, physical and spiritual”. The lines indicate formal elements, such as space and perspective, and echo hard-edge geometric abstraction, providing a formal distance from the complexities of the subject matter.
