This exhibition highlights selected works from Dieu Donné’s 2026 Paper Variables by Paul Anthony Smith, Shervone Neckles, and Martha Tuttle. Each artist worked with one of our papermaking collaborators to produce a variable edition available exclusively through our membership program.
Across three very different series of handmade paper works, each artist explores the power, beauty, and ultimate ephemerality of the natural world. Smith’s silkscreened pulp paintings of blossoming tree canopies, Spring in the city, depict the shifting light of day and the cusp of a new season. With Types of clouds I tried to identify in an unusual sky, abstract collages of embedded silk and stenciled textiles, Tuttle evokes the layered translucency of clouds subtly morphing from one form to another. For her Plant Medicine series, Neckles harnesses the medicinal and healing power of plants, using Caribbean “Bush Tea” recipes as the basis for handmade paper. Spiced with cinnamon, nutmeg, turmeric, and saffron, their fragrant scent is as immaterial as it is powerful, just like shape-shifting clouds or the atmospheric light that draws forth a burst of cherry blossoms.
Since 2000, Dieu Donné has collaborated with over 50 artists to create the Paper Variables series: a collection of exclusive pieces, handmade in our studios from wet paper pulp. Invited artists explore variations in color, shape, and texture, making each work within the series distinctively unique and enhancing its value for collectors.
