Today’s Hanji: Current Perspectives from Korea

“Today’s Hanji: Current Perspectives from Korea” is a lecture by Aimee Lee. Lee is an artist who makes paper, writes, and advocates for Korean papermaking practices (BA, Oberlin College; MFA, Columbia College Chicago). Her initial Fulbright research led to the first hanji studio in North America, and to an award-winning book, "Hanji Unfurled." In this lecture, participants will learn about the techniques behind making hanji (Korean paper) alongside stories from the current landscape of papermakers who still labor in obscurity to produce a variety of fine paper that persists today. “Papermaking by Hand in India” is a lecture by Radha Pandey. Pandey earned her MFA in Book Arts from the University of Iowa Center for the Book where she was a recipient of the Iowa Arts Fellowship. She teaches papermaking and book arts in India, Europe and the US. The talk will focus on traditional Indo-Islamicate papermaking history and techniques, with a focus on contemporary practices in India.
