Dieu Donné is pleased to release Types of clouds I tried to identify in an unusual sky, a new Paper Variables edition series by Martha Tuttle. Created in collaboration with Dieu Donné’s Artistic Projects Manager and Studio Collaborator Katharine DeLamater, 15 handmade paper variables are available through Dieu Donné’s 2026 membership program.
Artist Statement
“These works arrive out of the way a seam layers one piece of material over another. They are an exploration of transparency and density; wrinkle and straight edges; the way a color changes when layered over itself or another. I love the way these sheets of abaca can hold the shape of cloth, or even added pulp, exactly as if it were a cloud about to change. Because less formally seams are a place where energy occurs. And growth, or transitional ecologies. Riverbanks, for instance. The moment between a dream and waking. The one million different shades of yellow a leaf takes one before it falls. The intake of air just before someone says I love you for the first time.”

About the Artist
Martha Tuttle (b. 1989, Santa Fe, NM) is an artist working between painting, textile, and sculpture. She is interested in the intimacies and discourses possible between entities of varying scales and time frames, such as the human and the mineral, or the pebble and the interplanetary. She received her BA from Bard College in 2011, and her MFA from The Yale School of Art in 2015. Fellowships and residencies have included The Rauschenberg Foundation, The Sharpe-Walentas Studio Program, TheMontello Foundation, A-Z West and The Ucross Foundation. Her work has been shown throughout the U.S. and internationally, and has been written about in The New York Times, The New Yorker, Art Forum, Art in America, BOMB, and The Brooklyn Rail among others. She is based in Brooklyn, NY.

The 2026 Paper Variables are exclusively available through our Membership Program. For collectors, it’s an opportunity to acquire unique works by well-known artists while supporting Dieu Donné’s artistic and educational programming. Each work is signed and numbered by the artist.
