The reconfiguration of the world map in Lisa Corinne Davis’s glowing monochromatic work Untitled may suggest the medieval debate of the earth’s flatness and its centrality in the universe, but it achieves a cartography that departs from the literalness associated with Rand McNally. The brown huge of this particular work unifies the field to bring the continents together. Rather than try to draw the separate land forms of a contemporary map, the artist brings the focus back to Pangea, when the continents comprised one large mass with no clear boundaries. This work, along with the more recent installation of indistinguishable human noses made from cast paper titled David, Jonathan, Sally Reiner..., is a site fora discussion of difference and interwoven histories, exposing cracks in essentialist identity politics and melting-pot theories by quietly suggesting that we all come from the same place.
