Katherine Bradford was commissioned to create 25 new, unique variants collectively titled Superheroes & Divers for the 2014 Paper Variables edition program. Working collaboratively with Studio Collaborator Amy Jacobs, the artist used pigmented pulp to translate her painting process into a new medium. The 25 individual works in the series each feature a diver or a superhero suspended mid-air with unique backgrounds.

Bradford’s edition embodies the confidently vulnerable style of her painting, which has been described by the New York Times critic Ken Johnson, as “sumptuously tactile…comical yet earnest…a metaphysical revelation deftly conjured out of the sensuous stuff of material reality.” (May, 3, 2012). The playful, vibrant colors enhance the diver or hero suspended in midflight, seen from behind, soaring unencumbered with grace and courage.
